Currently, Dr. Donoso serves as Scientific Advisor, Co-Principal Investigator for an NIH study, Autosomal Dominant Stargardt Macular Dystrophy, with funding through August, 2004.

With over three decades of bench and clinical research experience, Dr. Larry Donoso adds an important component to the combined talents of the IRRF Board of Directors, acting as Scientific Director. Dr. Donoso holds degrees in Chemistry (B.S.), Experimental Biology (M.S.), Biochemistry/Biology (Ph.D.), Medicine (M.D.), and Law (J.D.). He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of California, Sacramento Medical Center in 1974; an Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky in 1978; a Research Fellowship in Ocular Oncology in 1979 at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia; and a Retina Fellowship in 1980 at the Vitreo-Retinal Research Foundation in Memphis, In 1980, Dr. Donoso accepted the position of Director of Clinical Research at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and in 1986 was named Director of Retina Research. Dr. Donoso is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital and Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, and in 1987, was named the Thomas D. Duane, M.D., Ph.D. Professor of Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital and Jefferson Medical College.

Dr. Donoso (cutting ribbon) helped to dedicate the Larry A. Donoso Laboratory for Eye Research at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Queens Medical Center.

In 1997, Dr. Donoso was honored by the Queens Medical Center at the University of Nottingham, one of the United Kingdom's most prestigious academic medical centers, with the establishment of the Larry A. Donoso Laboratory for Eye Research. He is the first American to be honored in such a way by the Queens Medical Center. This recognition of his long collaboration in the creation of the new laboratory and his efforts to advance eye treatment for patients around the world was cited in the First Session of the U.S. Congress in 1997, and remains a permanent part of the Congressional Record.

Serving as Scientific Director for the IRRF, Dr. Donoso insures that all funding requests are peer reviewed by experts assigned according to vision research areas and related scientific disciplines for the primary purpose of evaluating the scientific and technical merit of each application received. Dr. Donoso also serves as Executive and Scientific Director of the Henry & Corinne Bower Research Laboratory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
